Scope
The goal of this interdisciplinary workshop is to discuss research on hydroclimate change around the tropical Atlantic basin with a focus on long instrumental measurements from the historical period. The tropical Atlantic basin holds vital ecosystems, important agricultural regions, and the largest planetary river systems, and its freshwater budget may play a role in global ocean circulation. There is a need for a basin-wide hydroclimate perspective as precipitation and river discharge variability in Africa and the Americas are linked through common processes such intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) shifts and Atlantic multidecadal SST variability (AMV). Instrumental hydroclimate records – in some cases going back to the 19th century – are valuable for understanding these processes, and for contextualizing paleoclimate, present-day, and projected future hydroclimate changes. We aim to bring together researchers working around the tropical Atlantic basin (broadly defined) who are developing instrumental records (e.g., through data rescue and recovery) with researchers investigating mechanisms of hydroclimate variability and climate change impacts, so that we can share expertise and benefit from each other’s work and approach.
