Armed with hiking boots and a smartphone, you can experience the Jungfrau region in an unusual way – thanks to the Jungfrau climate guide 2.0 from the University of Bern’s Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research. On seven climate paths, hikers interested in science and the environment can get background information about climate change in places where its impact can already be observed. Each path has five to seven spots where visitors can listen to details about what they see around them. GPS technology ensures that the recordings pop up automatically at the appropriate place.
The climate guide 2.0 comprises two parts: the climate paths with their audio guide, and the detailed background information and images illustrating climate change and research. The app costs just CHF 1.- at App Store or Google Play and is available in German, French and English for Android and iPhone users.
The best way to use the app is on one of the climate paths in Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren, but of course you can call up the information anywhere.
First version for the 175th anniversary of Uni Bern
The Jungfrau climate guide was originally compiled for the 175th anniversary of the University of Bern in 2009. It started as a multimedia platform installed on iPhones that people in the Jungfrau Region could rent.
Five years after its launch, the guide bas been developed into an app version: the Jungfrau climate guide 2.0. The knowledge behind it has been updated and expanded. It comes from scientists at the University of Bern’s Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research – a climate research centre with global reach.
The creation of the climate guide app was made possible by financial support from the Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU), Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB), the University of Bern and the Jungfrau Climate Co2Operation. The app was produced by the Bern company Texetera GmbH. Jungfrau Region Marketing AG is the distribution partner.
